Fruiting plants sit on a spectrum between "vegetative" (leafy, putting energy into stems and leaves) and "generative" (reproductive, putting energy into flowers and fruit). "Crop steering" is the practice of nudging a plant one way or the other using climate and irrigation. This tool reads four things you can measure on the plant and estimates which way it is leaning.

Weekly, for fruiting crops grown on a vine — tomato, pepper, cucumber, and cannabis in flower. It is not meaningful for leafy greens, herbs, or microgreens (no trusses, no steering). Use it to sanity-check whether your plants are drifting too vegetative or too generative before you change setpoints.

A higher index means more vegetative (leafy); lower means more generative (fruiting). "Balanced" is the goal for most of a fruiting cycle. If it reads Highly Vegetative you would typically steer generative — raise EC, widen the day/night temperature difference; if Highly Generative, steer vegetative — lower EC, water more often. Treat the Steering Direction as a prompt to review, not an instruction: change one variable at a time and watch the plant for a week.
